Southfield is a city in Michigan, United States.
Southfield, Michigan is a city located in the county of Oakland. Southfield is a suburb located in northern Detroit, MI. The city had a population of 71,739, according to the 2010 census. Southfield is part of Metro Detroit's upscale office market. The pride of the city is a cluster of five golden skyscrapers, which make up an area known as the "Golden Triangle". These buildings form the contemporary 2,200,000 square feet Southfield Town Center office complex. This center also includes the Westin Hotel and a conference center. Additionally, there is a 33-story luxury residential high-rise which is set apart from the industrial complex. Located just west, close by where the roads of I-696/Reuther Freeway and M-10/Lodge Freeway, merge, is the American Center.
Southfield was first surveyed in the year 1817. This was according to the plan by Michigan territorial governor Lewis Cass. Among the first settlers of Southfield were from the nearby towns of Birmingham and Royal Oak, Michigan.
Some even arrived from as far away as New York and Vermont. Soon after the 1817 survey, Southfield was settled by John Daniels in 1823. Some of the founders of the city of Southfield were the Heth, Stephens, Harmon, McClelland and Thompson, families.
Southfield was first organized as the township of Ossewa on the date of July 12, 1830, but the name was almost immediately changed only seventeen days later to its current Southfield Township. The name came from its location as the south fields of Bloomfield. In 1833 the first post office was built, and in 1873 the Town Hall was built.
In the year of 1942 on April 6th, the Southfield Fire Department was formed, followed by the police department in 1953. Beginning in the 1950s, cities and villages began to incorporate within the township, these towns included Lathrup Village in 1950, as well as Beverly Hills in 1957.
