Deltona, Florida is Volusia County's most populous city on Lake Monroe's northern shore along the St. Johns River in central Florida with 85,182 residents in 2010. Part of the Deltona-Daytona Beach-Ormond Beach MSA within Greater Orlando, Deltona primarily serves as a commuter town for Orlando and Daytona Beach.
Originally Deltona Lakes, the city was established in 1962 as a master-planned community by the Mackle Brothers and General Development Corporation. Intensive worldwide marketing of affordable, low-maintenance homes grew Deltona from a small subdivision to one of Central Florida's largest cities by the 20th century's end.
Nomadic Timucuans originally inhabited the area, thriving on plentiful fish and freshwater. After Florida's 1845 statehood, steamboats traveled St. Johns River to Lake Monroe. In 1859, George Sauls—former Confederate secret agent—wife Adeline, and six children settled three miles north of Osteen. Sauls' homestead burned in 1972.
From lakefront to residential areas, Deltona homeowners need lawn care and landscaping for Central Florida's subtropical climate and year-round maintenance.
