Caldwell, Idaho, is a city in central Canyon County. The city is directly northwest of Nampa and is about 25 miles west of Boise off of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway or Interstate 84.
The College of Idaho operates out of Caldwell. The liberal arts college was formed in 1891 and is the oldest private college in the state. About a thousand students are enrolled in the college every year.
There are eleven public schools in the city of Caldwell, including the Caldwell High School.
The Caldwell Industrial Airport is in the southeastern part of the city. The general aviation airport handles about 400 aircraft operations in a day. The asphalt runway is the busiest in the state for landings and takeoffs, although the airport does not handle commercial operation functions.
Caldwell, Idaho, was formed in 1883. The Oregon Trail moved through a part of the city. Settlers came to Caldwell through the trail and the discovery of gold in the nearby mountains. Robert Strahorn chose to move a part of the Oregon Short Line Railroad through the newly formed city. He named the city Caldwell in honor of former Kansas Senator Alexander Caldwell, one of his top business partners.
Caldwell has a population of 55,000. Caldwell is one of the fastest-growing cities in the Pacific Northwest, as the city’s population is more than twice what it was in 2000.
The Boise River forms much of Caldwell’s northern border. The Indian Creek, a tributary of the river, also goes through the central part of Caldwell.
There are ten city parks around Caldwell. Whittenberger Park and Curtis Park are both on the shores of the Boise River on the northern end of the city. The local park district also operates a public golf course near the downtown section of the city. Caldwell is also directly north of Lake Lowell.
