Berwyn, Illinois, is a western suburb of Chicago in Cook County. The town is south of Oak Park and west of Cicero.
Berwyn has a population of about 55,000. The city has the highest population density of any place in Illinois, with about 14,500 people per square mile.
Berwyn is about ten miles west of downtown Chicago. Berwyn connects to the city through the Stevenson Expressway or I-55 to the south, and the Chicago-Kansas City Expressway or I-290 to the north. There are also a few stations on the Metra BNSF Railway line that go through Berwyn. The rail line goes east to the Chicago Union Station and west to Aurora. Part of Historic US Route 66 travels through the southern end of Berwyn.
The Berwyn North and South School Districts serve students around Berwyn. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago has two schools in the city, the St. Odilo and St. Leonard Schools.
Berwyn, Illinois, was initially settled in the mid-nineteenth century as part of the Ottawa Trail. Much of the land was owned by realtors who worked for local retail magnate Marshall Field. The region enacted strict building codes that would ensure the efficiency of properties built around the city. Berwyn was incorporated in 1908 after breaking off from the Cicero Township. Berwyn takes its name from the Main Line suburb of Philadelphia of the same name.
Many of the homes around Berwyn are small two-story bungalow properties. There are multiple duplexes and three-unit houses around the city as well. Some of the properties were built in the 1920s and 1930s and feature clay tile roofs and stained glass windows. The designs of these properties have helped the city to produce the lowest CO2 emissions per capita of any part of the Chicago area.
The North Riverside Park Mall is the largest shopping center in Berwyn. The mall is off of the most extensive commercial roads in the city, West Cermak Road.
